Gold is a chemical element that originated from the Anglo-Saxon word gold (aurum in Latin, meaning glow of sunrise). It was early used before 6000 BC and discovered by people from the Middle East. “Au” is the canonical chemical symbol of gold. Its atomic number in the periodic table of elements is 79 with a location at Period 6 and Group 11, belonging to the d-block. The relative atomic mass of gold is 196.966569(4) Dalton, the number in the brackets indicating the uncertainty.
Palladium is a member of the platinum group of metals. It is a lustrous silver-white metal. It has a face-centered cubic crystalline structure, at ordinary temperatures, it is strongly resistant to corrosion in air and to the action of acids. It is attacked by hot acids, and it dissolves in aqua regia. It forms many compounds and several complex salts. Palladium has good corrosion resistance but is soluble in oxidizing acids and fused alkalis. It readily absorbs hydrogen gas (up to 900 times its own volume), but its main use is as a catalyst for hydrogenation.
